For 14 days prior to your surgery date, most patients are required to do a pre-op diet in order to shrink your liver and make the surgery easier. The diet is explained in detail by the Nutritionist during the class and information is given to you to take home. The main goal is to intake no more than 40 gms of carbohydrates per day. You have to eliminate fruit, sweets, dairy (some cheese allowed), and some veggies are not okay. I generally ate the same things most of the time I was on the diet because I'm the type of person that has to have simplicity. I don't like to do a lot of thinking about my food. So for breakfast most of the time I boiled 1-2 eggs and had 2 strips of bacon (pre-cooked for the sake of time). My daughter did the diet with me and she had the same. On the weekends, I would switch up a little bit but still had eggs and bacon, just cooked a different way. For lunch, since I work and usually eat while I'm working, I would have either a frozen dinner of cup of soup. Frozen dinners can be tricky because even though they say LEAN Cuisine and HEALTHY Choice, they may not serve the purpose. Most of them are high in carbs so you have to read the labels. Regardless of whatever you choose the key here is to READ THE LABELS. Also, beware of sugar alcohols. Again, you get all of this education in the nutrition class. It was eye opening. Just remember no bread, sweets, rice, potatoes! Those are No No's. After my 2 weeks, I lost 12 lbs. It's also important to exercise during this period. I rode my bike through the neighborhood most days because walking hurts my knees and feet. Then some days I can't even lie...I skipped! Don't judge me!!!
